There is so much good information around how our minds and bodies talk to each other. (I love Dr. Lissa Rankin’s new book, Mind Over Medicine). Our body hears everything we say… feels the impact of every thought we have. Every thought we think creates a different chemical response in our body.. something I heard a long time ago from the holistic medical pioneer Dr. Christiane Northrup during a talk she gave. I think she said every thought changes your hormones. That still feels like a powerful paradigm to me.
And working as I do with women around loving their bodies in new ways, releasing the thoughts and fears and ways of living that lead to overeating or food addiction or the deeply painful relationships that hating your body every moment of every day brings, I know that what you think impacts everything.
Women still chase diet and exercise as the be all and end all.
And yes, there are certainly good ways to keep our bodies and selves well and vital. But most of us are leaving out what I know is the most important part. What are you thinking… and are those thoughts triggering a stress-response… your body thinking there is an emergency and sending out all the chemicals designed to help you run from scary beasts in an instant. Ok in an emergency, not so much as a chronic state of being.
Most of us are marinating in stress.
And women that are trying to change their bodies are bringing stress into those efforts that work against them.
When you activate any kind of stress response, any chance you have of healing is sabotaged.
We can’t heal when we’re in fight-or-flight..
We’re too bombarded by stress chemicals and our healing mechanisms in the body are shut down, deactivated, out of reach.
The really bad news is that most of us are in fight-or-flight stress responses most of the time..even after the moment of fear or anxiety or worry passes we perpetuate it with our thoughts and worries and mental rehashing of the fears, keeping all of the stressful chemicals swirling.
Which keep us apart from what we want. Which prevent healing and well-being.
Your body can’t change under these conditions.
How often do you find yourself eating something while also judging yourself in some painful way? Most of my clients would have to admit to this happening often. I get it.. been there and still have to sometimes course-correct when I hear my self-critical or perfectionistic self rise up.
This is a kind of self-sabotage…one you may not have been aware of. Good to know about.
When you are thinking painful judgmental thoughts, your body’s ability to metabolize and digest food, to use it in optimal ways that support your body and even the goals you are trying to achieve…you can’t get there. It won’t work. Those stressful responses moving through you keep everything you want from being able to help.
I teach meditation at least once a week.. much more in many small moments both in classes and in private sessions with clients. Mindfulness and all sorts of other techniques to help you turn off the fight-or-flight stuff that harms you and keeps you stuck.
If you are in the midst of being imperfect (and we all are, most of the time, and I hope you are doing something to soothe yourself out of this painful level of striving- let’s talk!) you need to love and bless yourself.
If you are eating in ways that you wish you weren’t, it helps to love and bless yourself, love and bless the food, the moment, all of it.
It’s also essential to have an in-the-moment simple practice to find your way back to balance in your body… to move out of fight or flight regularly and easily. To find ways to come back to peace and quiet and calm in the moment is where we need to focus to be truly living well. To be able to create what we want… to not be losing vital energy all over the place until we are so depleted we can’t really create anything we want.
